About England

The England National Football Team represents England in international competitions and is affiliated with The Football Association, with its home ground at Wembley Stadium.

Team History

On October 26, 1863, The Football Association was founded, marking the official birth of modern football. In 1872, the first official international match in the history of modern football took place between England and Scotland. Before World War II, England declined invitations to participate in the first three FIFA World Cups organized by FIFA. At the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, England made their World Cup debut but finished second in their group and failed to advance. At the 1966 FIFA World Cup held in England, the team defeated West Germany in the final to win their first World Cup title, with a 4-2 victory in the decisive match.

England failed to qualify for the final stages of the 1974 FIFA World Cup in West Germany, the 1976 UEFA European Championship in Yugoslavia, and the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina. At the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, England topped their group to advance to the knockout stage. At the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, England drew with Argentina in the round of 16 and lost on penalties, exiting at the last 16. At the 2000 UEFA European Championship co-hosted by the Netherlands and Belgium, England lost consecutively to Portugal and Romania, failing to progress from the group stage. In the 2008 UEFA European Championship qualifiers, England was plagued by injuries and lost to Croatia in the final round, missing out on the finals.

Current Situation

On December 11, 2022, England was defeated by France in the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, failing to reach the semi-finals. On July 15, 2024, England lost to Spain in the final of the 2024 UEFA European Championship, finishing as runners-up and becoming the first team in history to lose consecutive European Championship finals. In January 2025, Thomas Tuchel was officially appointed as the head coach of the England national team.

On June 11, 2025, England suffered a comeback defeat to Senegal in a friendly match, marking the first time in the team’s history that they lost to an African team in an official match.
