Newcastle United lost 2-3 to Brentford in the Premier League, and Kieran Trippier spoke to the media after the match.

On the match
“It’s incredibly tough, there’s no denying that. After taking a 1-0 lead, the way we conceded goals was disappointing. Over the past few years, we’ve been a formidable force at home. But as I said a few days ago, we can’t hang our heads. The reality is we have another big game in midweek, though this result is certainly hard to take.”
On the frustration of surrendering the lead
“We’ve taken the lead in several of our recent games. The key is to turn up the pressure, hold onto the advantage and score a second goal. We’re going through a difficult period, there’s no doubt about it, but equally, we have another match in midweek. We need to bounce back, refocus and concentrate on that another important game in midweek.”
On inspiring teammates as a senior player
“It’s my responsibility, the responsibility of the senior players, to calm things down and lead by example. I’ve been in this situation many times throughout my career, and so have the other senior players. So it’s my duty to help the lads, because it’s a demanding season with a lot of games. As a senior player in the dressing room, I take full responsibility.”
On what to say to those frustrated with recent results and the head coach
"First and foremost, I want to say this has nothing to do with the head coach. We are responsible for the performance on the pitch. The gaffer sets the plan, and we do our best to execute it. I will never go down the road of blaming the head coach, I’d never do that. It’s us players who have to take responsibility out there. Now we have to pick ourselves up, put in the performances, start winning games – and most importantly, do it for ourselves, for the supporters, for the club, and of course, equally for the head coach."
