According to The Athletic journalists Mario Cortegana, Guillermo Rai and Pol Ballús, Barcelona are conducting transfer negotiations for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez.

Sources have revealed that Barcelona are preparing an official offer of approximately 100 million euros and pushing forward the deal through his agent Juanma López. The Catalan side has established contact with Julián Álvarez’s camp and held talks with Atlético Madrid as well, though the La Liga club is demanding a higher transfer fee.

Sources also state that Julián Álvarez himself hopes to join Barcelona, and personal terms are expected to be settled without any issues.

The Athletic previously reported that Julián Álvarez ranks as Barcelona’s top target for forward reinforcements this summer. The club aims to sign a centre-forward to replace Robert Lewandowski, who left the team on a free transfer after his contract expired. Both Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco hold high regard for the Argentine striker, whom the club has been monitoring for around one year.

In addition, Arsenal are also admirers of Julián Álvarez. Ahead of the Champions League semi-final tie between Atlético Madrid and Arsenal, Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone confirmed the Gunners' interest in the forward.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are pressing ahead with the deal to sign winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for 80 million euros. Club insiders insist that the move for Gordon will not derail their pursuit of Julián Álvarez. Anthony Gordon is travelling to Barcelona and is scheduled to undergo his medical examination later.

Anthony Gordon is expected to fill the role occupied by Marcus Rashford in Hansi Flick’s squad for the 2025/26 season. Barcelona hold a €30 million buyout option for Marcus Rashford, but it appears highly unlikely that the club will activate this clause.
