The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has taken action after several Netherlands national team players received racist abuse across social media platforms. Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville were forced to disable the comment sections on their Instagram accounts following the Netherlands’ World Cup elimination; the three players all missed their spot kicks in the penalty shootout against Morocco.

Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Summerville took their turn to step up in the shootout but failed to convert their penalties, resulting in the Netherlands’ early exit from the tournament. Instead of receiving public support, Summerville, and especially Kluivert and Timber, were flooded with hateful, openly racist online comments.

The Royal Dutch Football Association condemned these messages and announced corresponding measures. The association stated: “We find this absolutely appalling. We run a campaign against discrimination in football that encourages people to report all online discriminatory behaviour. Once a report is filed, legal staff will assess whether the remarks constitute an offence liable to legal punishment, which can pave the way for a formal complaint to the public prosecutor’s office, who may then launch a criminal investigation.”

The KNVB confirmed it will file official reports itself over the abusive comments directed at the players.

Filing reports through the dedicated reporting portal can lead to formal charges being brought before prosecutors, though it remains unclear whether the case will progress to that stage. The association concluded its statement: “We have seen countless racist and discriminatory slurs targeting our players online after the team’s elimination. We draw a firm line against such conduct. There is no place for racism or discrimination — not in football, not online, and not in our wider society. Football unites millions of diverse people, yet discrimination drives division. This abuse stands in complete opposition to everything football stands for.”
